But Parris had had a quarrel in his church; a part of the 2 CONC congregation desired that George Burroughs, the first minister in Salem, 2 CONC should be reinstated to the exclusion of Parris. Burroughs still lived in 2 CONC Salem and there was great animosity between the partisans of the former 2 CONC and the present pastor. Burroughs disbelieved in witchcraft and openly 2 CONC expressed his contempt of the system; here then, Parris found an 2 CONC opportunity to turn the confessions of the foolish Indian servant against 2 CONC his enemies to overwhelm his rival with the superstitions of the 2 CONC community, and perhaps to have him put to death. There is no doubt 2 CONC whatever that the whole murderous scheme originated in the personal 2 CONC malice of Parris. 2 CONT But there were others ready to aid him. First among these was the 2 CONC celebrated Cotton Mather, minister of Boston. He being in high repute for 2 CONC wisdom had recently preached much on the subject of witchcraft, teaching 2 CONC the people that witches were dangerous and ought to be put to death. He 2 CONC thus became the natural confederate of Parris and the chief author of the 2 CONC terrible scenes that ensued. Sir William Phipps, 2 CONT the royal governor, who had just arrived from England, was a member of 2 CONC Mather's church. Increase Mather, the father of Cotton, had nominated 2 CONC Phipps to his present office. Stoughton, the deputy governor, who was 2 CONC appointed judge and presided at the trials of the witches was the tool of 2 CONC Parris and the two 2 CONT Mathers. To these men, more especially to Parris and Mather, must be 2 CONC charged the full infamy of what followed. 2 CONT By the laws of England, witchcraft was punished with death. The code of 2 CONC Massachusetts was the same as that of the mother country. In the early 2 CONC history of the colony, one person charged with being a wizard had been 2 CONC arrested at Charlestown, convicted and executed. But with the progress 2 CONC and enlightenment of the people, many had grown bold enough to denounce 2 CONC and despise the baleful superstition. Something 2 CONT -6- 2 CONT therefore had to be done to save the tottering fabric of witchcraft from 2 CONC falling into contempt. A special court was accordingly appointed by 2 CONC Governor Phipps to go to Salem and sit in judgment on the persons accused 2 CONC by Parris. Stoughton was the presiding judge, Parris himself the 2 CONC prosecutor, and Cotton 2 CONT Mather a kind of bishop to decide when the testimony was sufficient to 2 CONC condemn. 2 CONT On the 21st of March the horrible proceedings began. Mary Cory was 2 CONC arrested, not indeed for being a witch, but for denying the reality of 2 CONC witchcraft. When brought before the church and court she denied all 2 CONC guilt, but was convicted and hurried to prison. Sarah Cloyce and Rebecca 2 CONC Nurse, two sisters of the most exemplary lives, were next apprehended as 2 CONC witches. The only witnesses against them were Tituba, her 2 CONT half-witted Indian husband and the simple girl Abigail Williams, the 2 CONC niece of Parris. The victims were sent to prison protesting their 2 CONC innocence. Giles Cory a patriarch of eighty years was next seized; he 2 CONC also was one of those who had opposed Parris. The Indian accuser fell 2 CONC down before Edward Bishop, pretending to be in a fit under satanic 2 CONC influence; the sturdy farmer cured her instantly with a sound flogging 2 CONC and said he could restore the rest of the afflicted in the same manner. 2 CONC He and his wife were immediately arrested and condemned. George 2 CONC Burroughs, the rival of Parris, was accused and hurried to prison; and so 2 CONC the work went on until seventy-five innocent people were locked up in 2 CONC dungeons. Not a solitary partisan of Parris or Mather had been arrested. 2 CONC In the hope of saving their lives, some of the terrified prisoners now 2 CONC began to confess themselves witches or bewitched. It was soon found that 2 CONC a confession was almost certain to procure liberation; it became evident 2 CONC that the accused were to be put 2 CONT to death, not for being witches or wizards but for denying the reality of 2 CONC witchcraft. The special court was already in session; convictions 2 CONC followed fast; the gallows stood ready waiting for its victims. The truth 2 CONC of Mather's preaching was to be es 2 CONT -7- 2 CONT tablished by hanging whoever denied it and Parris was to save his 2 CONC pastorate by murdering his rival. When the noble Burroughs mounted the 2 CONC scaffold, he stood composedly and repeated correctly the test prayer (The 2 CONC Lord's Prayer) which it was said no wizard could utter. The people broke 2 CONC into sobs and moans, and would have rescued their friend from death, but 2 CONC the tyrant Mather dashed among them on horse back, uttering imprecations 2 CONC and drove the hangman to his horrid work. Old Giles Cory, seeing 2 CONC conviction was certain refused to plead and was pressed to death; five 2 CONC women were hung in one day. Between the 10th of June and the 22d of 2 CONC September, twenty victims were hurried to their doom; fifty-five 2 CONT others had been tortured into confession of abominable falsehoods; 150 2 CONC lay in prison awaiting their fate; 200 were accused or suspected and ruin 2 CONC seemed to impend over New England. But a reaction at last set in among 2 CONC the people. Notwithstanding the vociferous clamor and denunciations of 2 CONC Mather, the witch tribunals were overthrown. The representative assembly 2 CONC convened early in October and the hated court which Phipps had appointed 2 CONC to sit in Salem was at once dismissed. The spell was dissolved; the 2 CONC thraldom of the popular mind was broken; reason shook off the terror that 2 CONC had oppressed it; the prison doors were opened and the victims of malice 2 CONC and superstition went forth free." 2 CONT In a book, Witchcraft of New England, explained by modern spiritualism by 2 CONC Allen Putnam, I find and copy a few extracts in regard to George 2 CONC Burroughs. "He was graduated at Harvard college in 1670, had been a 2 CONC preacher for many years prior to 1692, and during some of them ministered 2 CONC to the people of Salem village. But before the outburst of witchcraft 2 CONC there he had found a home far off to the northeast on the shores of Casco 2 CONC Bay in the Province of Maine, where he was then humbly and quietly 2 CONC laboring in his profession. 2 CONT The day before his execution Margaret Jacobs, who had testified against 2 CONC him, came to the prisoner, acknowledging that 2 CONT -8- 2 CONT she had belied him and asking his forgiveness who not only forgave her, 2 CONC but also prayed with and for her. At his execution he made a speech for 2 CONC the clearing of his innocency, with such solemn and serious expressions 2 CONC as were to the admiration of all present. His prayer, (which he concluded 2 CONC by repeating 2 CONT the Lord's prayer) was so well worded and uttered with such composedness 2 CONC and such fervency of spirit as was very affecting and drew tears from 2 CONC many, so that it seemed to many that the spectators would hinder his 2 CONC execution. 2 CONT Cotton Mather, being mounted upon a horse, addressed himself to the 2 CONC people saying that Burroughs was not an ordained minister, and was 2 CONC guilty, and that the devil has often been transformed into an angel of 2 CONC light, which somewhat appeased the people, and the executions went on. 2 CONT The brief account which Upham's researches enabled him to furnish of this 2 CONC man's life prior to the witchcraft mania presents still further evidences 2 CONC of his sterling worth. That author says, "Papers on file in the State 2 CONC House prove that in the District of Maine, where he lived and preached, 2 CONC he was regarded with confidence by his neighbors and looked upon as a 2 CONC friend and counselor. He was self-denying, generous and public-spirited, 2 CONC laboring in humility and zeal in the midst of great privations. Land had 2 CONC been granted him, and when the town asked him to exchange a part of it 2 CONC for other lands he freely gave it back, not desiring any other land or 2 CONC consideration for it. Scanning Burroughs as well as accessible 2 CONT knowledge of him now permits, we judge that he was a quiet, peaceful 2 CONC laborer for the good of his fellow men--a humble, trustful, sincere 2 CONC servant of God--a rare embodiment of the prevailing perceptions, 2 CONC sentiments, virtues and graces which haloed the form of the Nazarene. 2 CONT Cotton Mather says he was a very puny man, yet he had often done things 2 CONC beyond the strength of a giant. All subsequent historians have mentioned 2 CONC what is no doubt true, that Burroughs was a small man, and yet was 2 CONC constitutionally very 2 CONT -9- 2 CONT strong--was remarkable for physical powers even in his college days." 2 CONT But this victim may have been, and probably was, as high above most of 2 CONC his crucifiers as freedom is above bondage, as light above darkness, as 2 CONC sincerity above hypocrisy. The blood of such as Martha Cory, Rebecca 2 CONC Nurse, Mary Easty, George Burroughs, and others who in company with these 2 CONC took their exit from life shrouded in witchcraft's blackening mists, may 2 CONC go far toward making Gallows Hill a Mount Calvary--a spot on which zeal 2 CONC urged on the worse to crucify their betters in true Godliness. 2 CONT (The modern spiritualists consider George Burroughs and others who 2 CONC suffered martyrdom were mediums.) 2 CONT The indictment against George Burroughs for witchcraft, August 5, 1692, 2 CONC he with others were brought to trial and condemned. 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: Anno Regis et Reginae, Sc Quarto. 2 CONT [Essex ss.] The Jurors for our sovereign lord and lady the king and 2 CONC queen, present, that George Burroughs, late of Falmouth in the Province 2 CONC of Massachusetts bay, clerk, the ninth day of May, in the fourth year of 2 CONC the reign of our sovereign, Lord and Lady William and Mary by the grace 2 CONC of God 2 CONT of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, king and queen, defenders of 2 CONC the faith, etc., and divers other days and times, as well before as after 2 CONC certain detestable acts called witchcraft and sorceries; wickedly and 2 CONC feloniously hath used, practiced and exercised at and within the town of 2 CONC Salem, in the county 2 CONT of Essex aforesaid, in, upon and against one Mary Walcot, of Salem 2 CONC village, in county of Essex, single woman; by which said wicked arts, the 2 CONC said Mary Walcot, the ninth day of May, in fourth year above said, and 2 CONC divers other days and times as well before as after, was and is tortured, 2 CONC afflicted, pined, con- 2 CONT sumed, wasted, and tormented, against the peace of our sovereign Lord and 2 CONC Lady the King and Queen, and against the form of the statute in that case 2 CONC made and provided. 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: -10- 2 CONT Endorsed Billa vera." The Indian accuser fell 2 CONC down before Edward Bishop, pretending to be in a fit under satanic 2 CONC influence; the sturdy farmer cured her instantly with a sound flogging 2 CONC and said he could restore the rest of the afflicted in the same manner. The truth 2 CONC of Mather's preaching was to be established by hanging whoever denied it 2 CONC and Parris was to save 2 CONT his pastorate by murdering his rival. When the noble Burroughs mounted 2 CONC the scaffold, he stood composedly and repeated correctly the test prayer 2 CONC (The Lord's Prayer) which it was said no wizard could utter. The people 2 CONC broke into sobs and moans, and would have rescued their friend from 2 CONC death, but the tyrant Mather dashed among them on horseback, uttering 2 CONC imprecations and drove the hangman to his 2 CONT horrid work. Old Giles Cory, seeing conviction was certain refused to 2 CONC plead and was pressed to death; five women were hung in one day. Between 2 CONC the 10th of June and the 22d of September, twenty victims were hurried to 2 CONC their doom; fifty-five others had been tortured into confession of 2 CONC abominable false- 2 CONT hoods; 150 lay in prison awaiting their fate; 200 were accused or 2 CONC suspected and ruin seemed to impend over New England. But a reaction at 2 CONC last set in among the people. Notwithstanding the vociferous clamor and 2 CONC denunciations of Mather, the witch tribunals were overthrown. The 2 CONC representative assembly convened early in October and the hated court 2 CONC which Phipps had appointed to sit in Salem was at once dismissed. The 2 CONC spell was dissolved; the thraldom of the popular mind was broken; reason 2 CONC shook off the terror that had oppressed it; the prison doors were opened 2 CONC and the victims of malice and superstition went forth free." 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: In a book, Witchcraft of New England, explained by modern 2 CONC spiritualism by Allen Putnam, I find and copy a few extracts in regard to 2 CONC George Burroughs. "He was graduated at Harvard college in 1670, had been 2 CONC a preacher for many years prior to 1692, and during some of them 2 CONC ministered to the people of Salem village. But before the outburst of 2 CONC witchcraft there he had found a home far off to the northeast on the 2 CONT shores of Casco Bay in the Province of Maine, where he was then humbly 2 CONC and quietly laboring in his profession. 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: The day before his execution Margaret Jacobs, who had 2 CONC testified against him, came to the prisoner, acknowledging that she had 2 CONC belied him and asking his forgiveness who not only forgave her, but also 2 CONC prayed with and for her. At his execution he made a speech for the 2 CONC clearing of his innocency, with such 2 CONT solemn and serious expressions as were to the admiration of all present. 2 CONC His prayer, (which he concluded by repeating the Lord's prayer) was so 2 CONC well worded and uttered with such composedness and such fervency of 2 CONC spirit as was very affecting and drew tears from many, so that it seemed 2 CONC to many that 2 CONT the spectators would hinder his execution. 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: Cotton Mather, being mounted upon a horse, addressed himself 2 CONC to the people saying that Burroughs was not an ordained minister, and was 2 CONC guilty, and that the devil has often been transformed into an angel of 2 CONC light, which somewhat appeased the people, and the executions went on. 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: The brief account which Upham's researches enabled him to 2 CONC furnish of this man's life prior to the witchcraft mania presents still 2 CONC further evidences of his sterling worth. That author says, "Papers on 2 CONC file in the State House prove that in the District of Maine, where he 2 CONC lived and preached, he was regarded with confidence by his neighbors and 2 CONC looked upon as a friend and counselor. He was self-denying, generous and 2 CONC public-spirited, laboring in humility and zeal in the midst of great 2 CONC privations. Land had been granted him, and when the town asked him to 2 CONC exchange a part of it for other lands he freely gave it back, not 2 CONC desiring any other land or consideration for it. Scanning Burroughs as 2 CONC well as accessible 2 CONT knowledge of him now permits, we judge that he was a quiet, peaceful 2 CONC laborer for the good of his fellow men--a humble, trustful, sincere 2 CONC servant of God--a rare embodiment of the prevailing perceptions, 2 CONC sentiments, virtues and graces which haloed the form of the Nazarene. 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: Cotton Mather says he was a very puny man, yet he had often 2 CONC done things beyond the strength of a giant. All subsequent historians 2 CONC have mentioned what is no doubt true, that Burroughs was a small man, and 2 CONC yet was constitutionally very strong--was remarkable for physical powers 2 CONC even in his college days." 2 CONT But this victim may have been, and probably was, as high above most of 2 CONC his crucifiers as freedom is above bondage, as light above darkness, as 2 CONC sincerity above hypocrisy. (The 2 CONC modern spiritualists consider George Burroughs and others who suffered 2 CONC martyrdom were mediums.) 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: The indictment against George Burroughs for witchcraft, August 2 CONC 5, 1692, he with others were brought to trial and condemned. 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: Anno Regis et Reginae, Sc Quarto. 2 CONT [Essex ss.] The Jurors for our sovereign lord and lady the king and 2 CONC queen, present, that George Burroughs, late of Falmouth in the Province 2 CONC of Massachusetts bay, clerk, the ninth day of May, in the fourth year of 2 CONC the reign of our sovereign, Lord and Lady William and Mary by the grace 2 CONC of God of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, king and queen, 2 CONC defenders of the faith, etc., and divers other days and times, as well 2 CONC before as after certain detestable acts called witchcraft and sorceries; 2 CONC wickedly and feloniously hath used, practiced and exercised at and within 2 CONC the town of Salem, in the county 2 CONT of Essex aforesaid, in, upon and against one Mary Walcot, of Salem 2 CONC village, in county of Essex, single woman; by which said wicked arts, the 2 CONC said Mary Walcot, the ninth day of May, in fourth year above said, and 2 CONC divers other days and times as well before as after, was and is tortured, 2 CONC afflicted, pined, con- 2 CONT sumed, wasted, and tormented, against the peace of our sovereign Lord and 2 CONC Lady the King and Queen, and against the form of the statute in that case 2 CONC made and provided. 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: Endorsed Billa vera." He lived 2 CONC at Falmouth (now Portland, Maine) until the Indians destroyed it in 1690, 2 CONC when he removed to Wells. In May 1692 during the witchcraft delusion, on 2 CONC the accusation of some personal enemies in his former congregation who 2 CONC had sued him for debt, Burroughs was arrested and charged, among other 2 CONC offences, with “extraordinary Lifting and ,such feats of strength as 2 CONC could not be done without Diabolicall Assistance.” Though the jury found 2 CONC no witch-marks on his body he was convicted and executed on Gallows Hill, 2 CONC Salem, on the Igth of August, the only minister who suffered this extreme 2 CONC fate. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: > Bill - I ran across a few records that seem to tie the 2 CONC Burroughs/Style 2 CONT > families of Maryland and VA to the Burroughs of Massachusetts and the 2 CONT Salem 2 CONT > Witch trials. 2 CONT > 1. Reference that her son, George, was "brought early" to America would, 2 CONC of course, lead to the conclusion that she brought hr son George to 2 CONC America when he was a child. 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: We now enter the realm of speculation. Although not mentioned, 2 CONC Nathaniel Burroughs probably came to Virginia with wife Rebecca and son 2 CONC George and, perhaps, other children, probably the result of religious 2 CONC persecution. He either died in Virginia or returned to England due to 2 CONC illness. This would depend upon whether his will of 1681 was probated on 2 CONC that date or written on that date. The former is more likely. It is 2 CONC unlikely that Rebecca would have journeyed to New England without 2 CONC relatives in this area. Remember, this was only approximately fifteen or 2 CONC twenty years after pilgrims arrivd at Plymouth Rock. Only the most 2 CONC primitive of conditions existed. I believe that it is likely that this 2 CONC relative could be the same Jeremiah mentioned in note 27. He could have 2 CONC journeyed with or preceeded Rebecca to New England. There was a Jeremiah 2 CONC Burroughs in New England in the late 1600s. Savage Genealogy even 2 CONC speculated on Jeremiah being father of Rev. George Burroughs (since 2 CONC disproved). I'm sure that this speculation was based on the fact that one 2 CONC of George's sons was named Jeremiah. This could also be the case if 2 CONC Jeremiah were a close relative. The case for it being the same Jeremiah 2 CONC of Virginia (note 27) is bolstered in that another child of Rev. George 2 CONC carries the same name (Elizabeth) as Jeremiah's wife, although granted 2 CONC that Elizabeth is a popular name. As stated elsewhere, there are avenues 2 CONC available to pursue this line of inquiry. The two best are: 2 CONT 1.
